Known generically as Mulching, the process involves the mechanical shredding of organic materials to form an agricultural protective layer of degradable biomass – or mulch – over the ground.
Robertson Agri owns a wide range of machines that can harvest and mulch trees, branches and brash efficiently and effectively.
By using its specialist mulching equipment, Robertson Agri is able to save its customers time and money, as the process of clearing and shredding can be carried out in one operation. It also overcomes the need to transport residue materials from the site, as is the case when traditional clearance methods such as felling and incineration are carried out.
Benefits of Mulching
Mulching is an ideal solution for areas that are intended for agricultural development or landscape projects, as the residue (mulch) enhances the soil beneath by conserving moisture and preventing evaporation. It also suppresses weed growth, helps fumigation and fertilization and, as such, can extend growing seasons.
The mulched residue also provides sustained support for micro-organisms that activate the soil’s self-healing powers. The mulch also maintains humus levels, whilst its gradual decomposition releases plant nutrients into the soil, meaning that the use of mineral-based fertilizers can be reduced.
Ecological viability and advantages
Mulching is an environmentally friendly and sustainable operation that conforms to ISO 14000 – Environmental Management. By reintroducing the shredded biomass into the natural cycle, it leads to improved soil structure and helps protect the ground from dehydration, erosion and mud accumulation. In addition, the shredded mulch will provide a sustainable source of plant nutrition, suppress weed growth and thereby reduce the amount of on-going resource needed to maintain the site.
Choosing to clear sites by using the ecologically responsible Mulching process means that the impact of removing trees and other vegetation is greatly reduced. Consequently, this can help a contractor maintain credibility and assist in the winning of tenders, especially when work is to be carried out in environmentally sensitive areas.
